Vathy Village

Vathy is a small, tranquil village located about 21 kilometers northeast of Chora, the main town of Astypalea. Nestled in a lush, fertile valley surrounded by rugged mountains, it offers a stark contrast to the island’s more developed areas. Vathy is one of the most remote spots on Astypalea, providing visitors with a peaceful escape into a simpler, more traditional way of life.
The village is divided into two parts: Exo Vathy (Outer Vathy) and Mesa Vathy (Inner Vathy). Mesa Vathy is built near a sheltered bay with calm, crystal-clear waters. The bay is perfect for small fishing boats, offering a tranquil setting where visitors can relax and take in the serene surroundings. Exo Vathy, on the other hand, is more rural and agricultural, with fertile fields, orchards, and olive groves that reflect the traditional farming heritage of the island.
While Vathy does not have organized beaches, the area is home to a few unspoiled and secluded spots for swimming, such as the bay of Mesa Vathy. These beaches are ideal for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature, away from crowds and tourist infrastructure.
The journey to Vathy offers scenic views of the island’s rugged landscape and requires about 45–50 minutes by car from Chora. The road is partially paved and then becomes a dirt path as you approach the village, adding to the sense of adventure and remoteness. For the more adventurous, hiking to Vathy is also an option, rewarding visitors with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Vathy’s charm lies in its simplicity. The village has a handful of traditional tavernas where you can enjoy fresh seafood, locally sourced vegetables, and other Astypalean delicacies. The harbor is also a favorite spot for small boats and fishing enthusiasts, making it a quiet but rewarding destination for those seeking an authentic experience on the island.
Vathy is perfect for travelers who wish to explore the untouched side of Astypalea, immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty, and experience the serenity of a place where time seems to stand still.
